The remote, vast desert plain in the Afar region of Ethiopia, is referred to as ‘the gateway to hell,’ due to its dry, fiery, scorching temperature environment.
Danakil Depression is a geological depression caused by the Afar Triple Junction – a place where three tectonic plates join. It is one of the hottest, driest and lowest places with daytime temperature soar to a sweltering 50°C. But, despite the challenges in visiting such a remote and hostile environment, there are numerous Danakil Depression tours on offer.
The unique, alien environment is peppered with roaring volcanoes, hot springs and miniature geysers. Heated by the region’s constant geothermal activity, the springs have developed ecosystems all of their own, with life that is found nowhere else.
The spectacular bright hues of the Dallol sulphur springs dot the landscape. In the hottest pools, sulphur and salt react to create bright yellow chimneys. In cooler pools, copper salts blend in vivid turquoise.
