One of the ancient wonder of the world, England’s iconic archaeological site with megalithic circle has a mysterious past that inspires awe and fascination.
Stonehenge is an archaeological site, consisting of about 100 massive upright stones placed in a circular layout. Located in a vast plain in Wiltshire, in southern England, near Amesbury, this mysterious World Heritage Site, is a popular tourist attraction.
Despite numerous theories, no-one knows for certain the reason why Stonehenge was built. Stonehenge with its architecturally, sophisticated, ancient stone circle, was constructed in several stages from 3000 BC to 2000 BC, The remains of huge standing stones of stone circles is a striking reminder of the masterpiece of architectural, engineering, social, and spiritual sophistication of Britain’s Neolithic peoples.
Although Stonehenge is still shrouded in mystery, there is a strong archaeological evidence that it was used as a burial site, at least for part of its long history. Other theories are that Stonehenge was an astronomical, healing, religious, sacred and ritual center.
Despite all its dilapidation and the violation of the modern world, Stonehenge is a rich source for the study of prehistory and holds a pivotal place in the development of archaeology.
