The Initiation Well

Secret mystical Traditions

Quinta da Regaleira is a spectacular estate with a pair of mysterious underground wells spiraling deep within the earth, which has symbolic and cultural meanings..

The Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira is a 88-foot-deep well located on the land of Quinta da Regaleira, near the town of Sintra, Portugal. Considered one of the popular tourist attractions of Sintra, in Portugal, the Initiation Well, and indeed, all of Quinta da Regaleira estate, is half reality, and half in a imaginary world.

While thousands of tourists flock every year to admire the unique, architecture of the Quinta de Regaleira vast estate which is built in the Neo-Manueline style, one of its most fascinating features is located beneath the ground – two mysterious wells known as Initiation Wells.’

The ‘Initiation Wells’ also called’ initiatic wells’ or ‘inverted towers’, are really two wells on the property that better resemble underground towers line with stairs. The tunnels connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park. Of the two wells, the larger one has a 27-meter spiral staircase with several small landings. The spacing of these landings, combined with the number of steps in the stairs, are linked to Tarot mysticism.

The smaller well contains straight stairs that connect a series of ring-shaped floors to one another. This well is also called the ‘Unfinished Well’. The Initiation Well never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites. At the bottom is a compass over a Knights Templar cross, the Coat of Arms of wealthy owner, Carvalho Monteiro, and his association with Rosicrucianism.
