On the sandy shores of Vaadhoo Island, under dark skies, the natural spectacles of surreal glowing blue waters of ‘Sea of Stars’ can be seen. This is caused by a natural chemical reaction known as bioluminescence, which takes place when the water is disturbed by oxygen.
Phytoplankton, the marine microorganisms in the water have a blue luminescence that occurs as they produce toxins. The phytoplankton’s blue glow is like a defence mechanism which wards off other marine organisms from eating them. This result in a glittering and sparkling ‘Sea of Stars’.
