The amazing Vatnajökull, also known as the ‘Water Glacier, is the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland, and one of the largest in area in Europe. In 2008, it became a part of the Vatnajökull National Park. It encompasses all of Vatnajökull glacier and extensive surrounding areas.
Vatnajökull covers over 8100 km2 and has around 30 outlet glaciers. Apart from the glacier, the National Park has some highly regarded natural marvels, huge glacier rivers, stunning canyons, beautiful glacier lagoons and impressive waterfalls.
In late autumn, a secret natural splendor is revealed and for a wrinkle in time, the mesmerizing Vatnajökull Ice Caves become accessible to man. From November to March, it is open to visitors with a professional glacier guide.
