One of the most beautiful geological wonders of the world is China’s Geological National Park, featuring spectacular, rainbow mountains, an amazing colorful show.
The Zhangye Danxia National Geopark is an incredible multicolored, rainbow mountains, one of the ‘most beautiful places in the world.’ It is a popular destination for both visitors and photographers, who want to experience and explore this true masterpiece of nature.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains, in the counties of Linze and Sunan near the city of Zhangye in the Gansu province. The main areas of Danxia landform are in Kangle and Baiyin townships. Zhangye Danxia covers an area of 322 square kilometres.
Nicknamed ‘the eye candy of Zhangye’ or ‘China’s Rainbow Mountains’, the naturally formed landscape is alive with shades of blue, emerald, green, orange, red and yellow. It was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.
Today, Zhangye Danxia Geopark is limited to specific areas. A series of access roads and boardwalks, have been constructed to allow greater tourist exploration of the rock formations. The best places to observe the land-forms, are from the four viewing platforms spread out over 8 kilometers.
