There are unsolved mysteries, which have intrigued us, but when the person missing is a famous celebrity or prominent figures, the mystery only intensifies.

People love a great unsolved mystery and unexplained disappearances. But when the person who vanished is a famous person, the mystery only intensifies. Though many of them are presumed dead, exactly what happened to them still remains a mystery.

Below are 10 cases of famous people who mysteriously disappeared without explanations.



10. Sean Flynn


Actor and photojournalist Sean Flynn, the only son of actor Errol Flynn, vanished in April of 1970, while on assignment in Cambodia for TIME magazine. It was later discovered that Flynn and a colleague, CBS reporter Dana Stone, were kidnapped by Khmer Rouge guerrillas. Reports indicate that the Khmer Rouge probably held Flynn and Stone captive for up to a year before executing them. Flynn's remains were never found, but in 1984, he was declared legally dead by his mother, actress Lili Damita.


9. James Riddle Hoffa


James Riddle Hoffa was an American labor union leader, who served as the President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union from 1958 until 1971. Hoffa became involved with organized crime and was convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery, and fraud in 1964. He was imprisoned in 1967.

In mid-1971, he resigned as president of the union as part of a pardon agreement with President Richard Nixon. In July 1975, at age 62, he vanished, and was declared legally dead in 1982. What happened to him?


8. Richard Stanley


Richard Stanley, a visionary South African film director attempting to bring the pages of, The Island of Dr. Moreau to life. Unfortunately, an uncontrollable production issues lead to Stanley being fired. New Line attempted to send Stanley home to America (the film was being shot in Australia), but Stanley never boarded the flight, disappearing into the Australian jungle.

Stanley claimed he hid in a fruit plantation, before sneaking back onto the set as an extra in the film. It was years before anyone truly understood his bizarre story, although it made more sense than the film ultimately did.


7. Harold Holt


On Dec. 17, 1967, Harold Holt, the 17th Prime Minister of Australia decided to go for a swim at Cheviot Beach near Victoria and never came back. Two days of exhaustive search efforts, brought no result. The authorities declared that 59-year-old Holt, a skilled swimmer and longtime member of Parliament was presumed dead. His body was never recovered and his disappearance is still an unsolved mystery.


6. Louis Le Prince


Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince, was a French inventor who shot the first moving pictures, and was heralded as the "Father of Cinematography." For movie lovers, it’s his achievements in the last few years of his life which have granted him a place in the history books.

However, Le Prince achievements were not widely recognized, because not long before a scheduled public performance of his technology, Le Prince went missing with no clues as to his whereabouts. Was it the perfect suicide? An assassination over a patent dispute? We might never know!


5. Lord Lucan - John Bingham


Lord Lucan, John Bingham, The 7th Earl of Lucan went missing after being suspected of the murder of Sandra Rivett. He was a debonair and sophisticated aristocrat who would race powerboats and was even considered for the role of James Bond at one point. Lucan wasn’t one to panic and felt he had a strong defense against the charge. Many people suggested that he killed himself, but no body was ever recovered. As a rich and connected man, he had the ability to make himself disappear.


4. Glenn Miller


Glenn Miller, one of the music world's biggest names during the Second World War, was a big bandleader, who boosted morale with many popular songs. During a visit to play for troops in the United Kingdom in December 1944, he went missing. After the gig, he left on a flight to do the same for other soldiers in Paris. Bit, Miller never arrived. Did his plane went down and sunk in the English Channel or was he shot down by Germans? It remains a mystery!


3. Jean Spangler


In 1948, Jean Spangler, an actress, dancer and model at aged 26, began her career. But a year later, she disappeared under mysterious circumstances. In October 7, 1949, Spangler left her daughter in the care of her sister-in-law, Sophie. Spangler told her that she was going to meet her ex husband, Dexter, to talk about a late child support payment and then she would be going to work on the movie set. She disappeared and her case remains unsolved.


2. Agatha Christie


Famed author, Agatha Christie had her own very mysterious episode on December 1926. The successful writer got in her car one day, after receiving some bad news from her husband and vanished. Her car was discovered dangling over the side of a cliff. Many police officers and volunteers were called to investigate, and later found in a hotel room. She offered no explanation, and some even insist that she staged the whole thing herself.


1. Amelia Earhart


Amelia Earhart, an American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record. It was on a typically adventurous trip that she mysteriously disappeared in 1937 while trying to circumnavigate the globe from the equator. She seemingly disappeared without a trace and was declared legally dead two years later.
